H.E. Dr. Makarim Wibisono

His
Excellency Dr. Makarim Wibisono presented his credentials as Permanent
Representative of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations and
other International Organizations in Geneva to Director-General of the
United Nations Office in Geneva Mr. Sergei Ordzhonikidze on 16 September
2004. Before assuming his post in Geneva, he was
Director-General for the Asia Pacific Region and Africa at the Department
of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta (2002-2004).
Ambassador Wibisono is a career diplomat
and joined the foreign service in 1972. He has vast diplomatic experience
in bilateral as well as multilateral international relations. |
He has served in a number of key positions at the
Department of Foreign Affairs such as Director-General for Foreign Economic
Relations (2000-2002), Director for Multilateral Economic Cooperation
(1991-1993), Deputy Director for Information Affairs (1987-1988), and Deputy
Director for Trade and Exhibitions (1981-1982).
Beside positions in the Ministry, Ambassador
Wibisono has served in various posts notably as Ambassador Extraordinary and
Plenipotentiary and Permanent Representative of Indonesia to the United Nations
in New York, concurrently with the post of Ambassador Extraordinary and
Plenipotentiary accredited to Guatemala, Nicaragua, Jamaica and the Bahamas
(1997-2001); Ambassador, Deputy Permanent Representative, Permanent Mission of
Indonesia to the United Nations in New York (1994-1997); Minister Counsellor,
Head of the Economic Division, Permanent Mission of Indonesia to the United
Nations, New York (1991-1993); Minister Counsellor, Head of the Information
Division of the Indonesian Embassy in Washington DC (1988-1991); Head of the
Information and Cultural Division of the Indonesian Embassy in Brasilia, Brazil
(1977-1981).

Wibisono has also held many positions in various international positions,
including as Chairman of the APEC Counter Terrorism Task Force (2003-present);
member of the United Nations Information and Communication Technology (UN ICT)
Task Force (November 2001-present); Chairman of the Working Group of the
Non-Aligned Countries on Disarmament, New York (1997-February 2001); Chairman of
the World Peace Assembly 2000 on Interreligious Dialogue among Civilizations,
United Nations, New York (2000); Chairman of Group 77 in 1998; President of the
Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), United Nations, New York (2000-January
2001); Chairman of the ECOSOC AdHoc Advisory Group on Haiti (1999); as well as
many other memberships of organization/Committees/Boards.
Ambassador
Wibisono holds a Ph.D from Ohio State University and Master of Arts from the
Paul Nitze School of Advanced International Studies of the Johns Hopkins
University. He was born on 8 May 1947 in Mataram, Indonesia, and is married with
three children.
