It is incumbent upon the mass of women to inherit anti-colonialist spirit and

Union Spirit from their female ancestors Myanmar women will never accept

the situation that diverts the nation from its goals

YANGON, 9 July—The celebration of Myanmar Women’s Day, organized by Bago Division Organization for Women’s Affairs, took place at the sports ground in Bago, Bago Division, on 3 July morning.

It was attended by patrons, the chairperson and members of Division WAO, members of division, district, township and ward WAOs, social organizations, town-selders and outstanding women, numbering over 1,500. Division WAO Chairperson Daw Khin Maw Maw presided over the ceremony together with executives Daw Aye Aye Min, Daw Swe Swe Than, Daw Khin May Aung and Daw Khin Lay Mu. Division OWA member Daw Moe Moe Khaing acted as MC and member Daw Htoo Me Me Win as co-MC.

The meeting chairperson delivered a speech. She said that now is not the present period Myanmar women have stood shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts in protecting and safeguarding the nation and the people and preserving the Sasana, since yore.

Throughout the nation’s history, various women associations have handed down fine traditions — being equipped with nationalistic fervour, valuing independence and preserving the lineage.

Thus, it is incumbent upon the mass of women to inherit anti-colonialist spirit and Union Spirit from their female ancestors.

Certain neo-colonia-lists are resorting to all possible ways and means to get under their thumb the nation enjoying all-round development that has justified the endeavours the Tatmadaw Government has been making unremittingly. Myanmar women will never accept the situation that diverts the nation from its goals.

She exhorted the mass of Myanmar women to put into reality the motto "Strive in concert for development of women" laid down by the Myanmar Women’s Affairs Federation.

Division WAO member Daw Khin Thuzar Thaung said that Myanmar does not witness much violence against women and trafficking in persons if compared with other nations. The MWAF is taking all possible measures in border areas for prevention of violence against women and rehabilitation of victims.

But, ABSDF and FTUB led by fugitive Maung Maung (a) Pyithit Nyunt Wai are committing destructive and terrorist acts audaciously with the instigation and spur of their foreign masters to the detriment of national development. On behalf of the mass of Myanmar women, she called for declaration of such evil groups unlawful associations.

She said the Division WAO protests against various groundless accusations of internal and external destructive elements. Myanmar women have enjoyed equal rights and opportunity in discharging nation-building tasks side by side with men in the nation.

Despite pressure and economic sanctions against the nation imposed by certain big nations, the government is making a good headway through implementation of pragmatic projects in making efforts to ensure stability, peace and development of the nation.

She pledged that the women mass of Bago Division will continue to participate in the tasks for regional and national development, to preserve fine traditions, and to safeguard and raise the social life of women. She said she denounces all unfair pressures and acts, and urged some big nations and destructive elements to take a positive approach to the affairs of the nation but not to attempt to undermine national solidarity. She said women of Bago Division took a solemn vow to make sustained efforts so that the nation will never fall to alien domination and subjugation again, and to serve the interests of the nation and the people in concert with congenial organizations.

Member of Bago Division WAO Daw Pa Pa Win said that the Government is striving for sector-wise development for enabling the Union of Myanmar to keep abreast of the global nations. Over 27 million women represent 50.3 per cent of the population of the nation. The Government is making systematic arrangements for Myanmar women to have the opportunity to take part in the deserving role in building a modern and developed nation.

Bago Division WAO formed with 84,764 members at one division-level, two district-level, 14 township-level and 836 village-level organizations is actively taking part in the development of the women’s sector. MWAF donated cash and kind to storm-hit victims recently. Likewise, officials of the federation comforted patients from the bomb blasts occurred in Yangon because of distractive acts and provided cash and medicines for them.

With regard to preventive measures against human trafficking endangering the life of women, MWAF has been holding educational talks. The federation together with the Ministry of Home Affairs held the National Seminar on Trafficking in Persons in May 2003, and the former organized together with the Ministry of Sports to hold the National Seminar on Women’s Sports in October.

At present, some big countries are putting pressure and imposing economic sanctions against Myanmar under the pretext of regarding human rights, national races’ rights, child rights and women’s.

However, it is obvious that these one-sided accusations are designated to benefit a handful of persons.

That is why the entire Myanmar women denounce and oppose the internal and external instigation of destructionists. Under the leadership of MWAF, the mass of Myanmar women will participate with might and main in development tasks of the nation and implementation of the State’s policies such as Our Three Main National Causes, 12 Objectives and the 4-point people desire. Similarly, Bago Division WAO with Union Spirit will take part in successfully realizing the seven-point Road Map for the emergence of a peaceful, modern and discipline-flourishing democratic nation.

Member of Bago Division Women’s Affairs Organization Daw Khin Malar Maung said Bago Division WAO is participating in the nation-building tasks for emergence of a peaceful modern developed nation in the respective role. In doing so, it is necessary for Myanmar women to possess qualifications and accept concept and belief. Myanmar Women’s Affairs Federation has given priority to the progress of nationalities. She said Myanmar woman intellectual and intelligentsia are discharding their duties in MWAF, Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Women Chapter of Myanmar Medical Association, Myanmar Women entrepreneurs Association, USDA and Myanmar Red Cross Society.

She said WAOs were formed at different levels in the whole country and tasks are being undertaken in accord with the objectives laid down. Achievements have been made in various parts of the country due to the government’s efforts in conformity with the customs of Myanmar. Some big nations and ILO begrudged the progress of the country and imposed sanctions on it. As a result, the people lost their jobs and suffered losses.

Moreover, she said, ILO ignored the efforts for eradication of forced labour. Therefore, she demanded that Myanmar should withdraw from ILO.

She said the entire women and the people strongly condemned the traitors and urged them to hand down the nationalistic fervour of patriotic Myanmar women of the successive eras.

Next, officials presented prizes to winners of essay contest in commemoration of Myanmar Women’s Day and outstanding women.

With national race armed groups having exchanged arms for peace unconditionally

and peace and stability prevailing in Shan state, all regions are now easily accessible

Shan State (North) commemorates Myanmar Women’s Day

YANGON, 9 July — Myanmar Women’s Day, organized by Shan State (North) Women’s Affairs Organization was observed at the city hall in Lashio on 3 July morning. Present on the occasion were Daw Khin Nyunt Myaing, organizer of Shan State (North), members of district and township organizations for women’s affairs in the state, women representatives of departments and social organizations and outstanding girl students.

Shan State (North) WAO Chairperson Daw Khin Mya Mya presided over the ceremony together with members Daw Nan Khin Latt, Daw Nan Kham Yin, Daw Gya Maing and Daw Khin Yi. Daw Nan Shwe Aye acted as MC and Daw Win Nanda Tun as co-MC.

First, those in attendance saluted the State Flag and sang a song in honour of Myanmar Women’s Day. Next, Daw Khin Mya Mya gave a speech, saying Myanmar Women’s Affair Federation was founded with the aim of improving the living condition of the mass of Myanmar women. Shan State Organization for Women’s Affairs is carrying out its tasks in accord with the policies laid down by the federation. In Shan State (North) various national races live, and out of 2.07 million of its population, the number of women is 1.04 million. Owing to the combined efforts of the public including women, the Tatmadaw and the government, Myanmar’s political, economic and social sectors have significantly improved. In addition, with the national race armed groups having exchanged arms for peace unconditionally and peace and stability prevailing in the state, all the regions are now easily accessible. She said at a time when national unity is being consolidated, internal and external destructive elements are resorting to various ways to drive a wedge among national brethren. Particularly, they are fabricating news to the effect that there are production of narcotic drugs, human trafficking and violence against women in Shan State.

It has been known to all that Myanmar is implementing drug elimination tasks, poppy-substitute crops cultivation and rehabilitation as a national duty. Projects are being implemented for the emergence of region-wise opium free zones, and as a result, 88 percent of opium cultivation has been reduced so far. She continued that members of Shan State (North) WAO are participating in the campaigns against drug elimination in cooperation with local authorities, national race groups, NGOs and the public. After gaining first-hand knowledge through the campaigns they have learned that the accusations of the West were totally wrong. She added the MWAF in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs saved some young women who were misled by unscrupulous persons and consoled and gave eductive talks to them before repatriating them to their parents.

She said there was no case of molestation of women. Traditionally, Myanmar are polite and as most are Buddhists, they usually hate such acts of harrassment. In particular, the Tatmadaw members follow and maintain rules and regulations and disciplines laid down by the State.

That is why, she said, the mass of women are urged to prevent all destructive acts and to take part in the nation-building tasks and national defence. They are also needed to discharge their duties in accord with the objectives of the State and work programmes of the MWAF by upholding Our Three Main National Causes. It is important for the members to be always imbued with Union Spirit. She said the mass of Myanmar women are to play a part in the successful implementation of the seven-point Road Map.

Member of Momeik Township WAO of Kyaukme District Daw Khaing Aye Chan explained duties and functions of the Working Group of Prevention of Violence against Women and Rehabilitation in brief. She continued to say that Shan State (North) WAO at different levels are carrying out the tasks on prevention of violence against women and its related laws for 56 times attended by 3,472 women. The organizations opened counseling centres at three districts. And, talks were held 64 times on prevention against human trafficking, attended by 1,584 women. Furthermore, the organizations in cooperation with departments concerned rescued six young women, victims of human trafficking and sent them back to their homes. In addition, the cultural courses for girls were opened for 20 times and talks on vitalization of patriotic spirit, nationalist spirit and Union Spirit for 15 times.

Similarly, the Working Group of Improving and Living Conditions of Women opened the vocational training courses and sought jobs for course graduates. It is obvious that MWAF is ensuring development of women in Shan State (North) while the Government is carrying out similar development tasks in all areas in the region.

It is noted that food, clothing and shelter needs of the people constitute one of the basic requirements to march to discipline-flourishing democratic nation. Individual development enhances national development. That is why all the Myanmar women are to make collective efforts for individual as well as national development.

All should be aware of the danger of internal and external destructive elements while Myanmar women are serving the greater interests of the nation and the people. The expatriate terrorist group led by Pyithit Nyunt Wai (a) Maung Maung is committing destructive acts to harm stability of the State, slowdown the State economy and cause loss of lives and property of the people. Pyithit Nyunt Wai (a) Maung Maung was son of NLD CEC member U Nyunt Wai. Action was taken against him for loss of jewellery at Gems Shop of Myanma Gems Corporation in August 1988. He absconded to the other country in 1989. Maung Maung who formed FTUB committed destructive acts for several times by providing monetary assistance and explosive equipment to the terrorists. Though the firm evidences were submitted to International Labour Organization, terrorist Maung Maung was allowed to speak as a representative of ICFTU at ILO Conference. So, ILO breached its own rules. At the conference, Maung Maung, disregarding the objective conditions in the country, complained that about 2,000-3,000 persons were forced to work in harvesting and road construction. It can be said that fugitive Maung Maung forgot Myanmar tradition and he got mad.

All the Myanmar nationals have been living in the country since time immemorial through thick and thin. They participate in welfare tasks of the society of their own accord. It is a Myanmar fine tradition. Maung Maung’s complaint went totally against Myanmar tradition, religious belief and culture.

Due to instigation of Pyithit Nyunt Wai (a) Maung Maung, some big countries imposed economic sanctions on Myanmar, so about 160 garment factories in Yangon Division were closed down, and workers were laid off from 40 other factories. Therefore, over 80,000 workers including over 70,000 women workers lost their jobs. Some jobless women fell into victims of human trafficking. That is why the mass of Myanmar women denounce and oppose destructive acts of Pyithit Nyunt Wai (a) Maung Maung and his accomplices. Furthermore, on behalf of the entire Myanmar women, she asked the Government to announce FTUB and other related terrorist organizations unlawful associations.

In conclusion, she said that members of Shan State WAO will observe and implement the plans for development of women adopted by MWAF and participate in their respective sectors to carry out successful implementation of the future tasks and development plans laid down by the Government.

Next, member of Lashio Township Women’s Affairs Organization Daw Yeah Leh Yun said she would like to present the measures undertaken by social and cultural group and nationalities affairs group of Myanmar Women’s Affairs Federation. Women’s organizations in Shan State (North) are participating in the implementation of the tasks of the federation. She said social and cultural group is organizing the women to take part in efforts for successful implementation of social objectives in cooperation with related departments and organizations.

She said Women’s organization in Shan State (North) presented prizes to one woman writer, five athletes, ten outstanding girls who passed the matriculation examination. It also provided medicine to the elderly persons, K 1.02 million for needy, K 1.13 million for uniform and K 1.16 million for stationery. For forging national solidarity and Union spirit, national races such as , Shan, Kachin, Palaung, Was, Lishaw, Kokang and Bamar collectively made performance at the 32 talks on traditions of national races. The number of schools, teachers and students increased in comparison with that in the past. Opportunity to pursue higher education is available everywhere after opening of degree colleges and computer college and technological college.

She said the government hand in hand with the Tatmadaw and the people is making endeavours for development of the country. At the same time, external destructive elements and internal elements are undermining the progress. ABSDF terrorist group led by Than Ge, formed in the border region in November 1988, is attempting to destroy properties of the people. It committed destructive acts continuously.

This is why she demanded that ABSDF be declared as an unlawful association. She said the entire women pledged to cooperate with the government for national development.

Daw Thanda Zaw, member of Tangyang Township WAO in Lashio District said Shan State (North) WAO is implementing the work programmes laid down by the MWAF including study of legislation, consultation and environmental conservation.

Shan State (North) is bordering with neighbouring nations, and there has prevailed peace and stability due to the endeavours of the government and the national people. She said Myanmar is marching towards a peaceful, modern and developed discipline-flourishing democratic nation in accord with the political, economic and social objectives by upholding ‘Our Three Main National Causes’. In doing so the seven-point road map has been adopted and the National Convention is in progress. The government is implementing projects for improving socio-economy of the people and developing human resources to achieve genuine democracy. That is why, she said, the country is now on its way to a peaceful, modern and developed one.

Despite the State’s efforts for the development of the nation, some western nations, organizations and persons holding negative views are trying to undermine these efforts. It is regrettable to to see that the ILO is among those. This organization should be a prestigious one under the umbrella of the United Nations Organization.

Regarding the issues of Myanmar, the ILO is putting pressure on the country and supporting expatriate Pyithit Nyunt Wai (a) Maung Maung who is always fabricating news on affairs of Myanmar. She said although Myanmar has long been a member of the ILO, it did not make a single good thing for the country. And it is always finding fault with Myanmar. So, Myanmar women cannot accept such acts.

Moreover, expatriate Sein Win-led NCGUB, not wanting to see the development of Myanmar, is committing destructive acts. Eight so-called Pyithu Hluttaw representatives including Sein Win were announced fugitives on 30 December 1990 after they had been charged with slandering the country. They, after joining terrorist insurgents, formed the DFB illegally. With the announcement of a parrelled government, they are committing destructive acts against Myanmar people.

She said expatriate Sein Win went to a country from 11 to 16 March 1997 and held a meeting on imposing economic sanction on Myanmar with his partners in exile. Besides, Thein Ngwe and Thomas (a) Gon Aung played an important part in helping Sein Win who drew plans to commit destructive acts in the country. Their first act was that they sent a parcel bomb to go off in the nation.

That is why Myanmar women totally denounced their acts. She said on behalf of the entire mass of Myanmar women, she would like to present that all insurgent groups including the NCGUB are to be announced unlawful associations. All in all, she said women are urged to work in accord with the four-point people’s desire in cooperation with all national people. Later, Daw Po Po Kyi presented K 420,000 to the groups which performed their skill demonstrations. Then, the ceremony ended with the chanting of slogans.
